As the regular season has come to a close, the Bethany College volleyball team has been busy preparing for the post-season. The Swedes traveled to Sterling College Tuesday night for the first round of the playoffs.

"The girls came out to play, they truly did," said head coach Nathalea Stephenson. "Everyone stepped up, worked hard, and they were focused."

Sterling came out firing in games one and two against Bethany. The Swedes clawed back and hung close, but lost two nail biters 25-23, 25-21. Bethany was finally able to gain and hold a lead in game three, winning 25-23. However, the Warriors immediately bounced back, winning game four and the match 25-16, ending the Swedes' season.

"I think we started a little bit too late," Stephenson said. "At times, we were ahead and let them get back in the game. But for the most part, I am proud of way we came out and played. We didn't rollover and say it was done."

Senior Kristi Parker, a first team All-Conference selection, led the offense with 12 kills. Senior Serah Pele-Lafo, who earned second team All-Conference honors, followed with six as senior Carrie DeRoo and freshman Samantha Andersen each added four. Senior Megan Wendell tallied 20 digs while freshman Theresa Read contributed ten. Senior Katy Troutman totaled 16 digs on the night, followed by Andersen and junior April Roble with 12 each. Wendell and DeRoo each threw down six assisted blocks as Parker tacked on four.

"Serah Pele-Lafo played well for us with her jump serve," said Stephenson said. "And Carrie DeRoo and Kristi Parker had some great blocks and did some nice things. Katy passed well."

The Swedes finished 7-11 in the KCAC, good for seventh place, and 10-25 overall.

"Kristi was a unanimous first team All-Conference selection," Stephenson said, "and Serah Pele-Lafo made second team and Sam Andersen was honorable mention. That is an attest to their play as far as what other coaches in the conference thought about them. I am looking for good things next year out of our under classmen. We've got some really good recruits signed and are talking to some. We are looking forward to next year."
