Looking for their first win of the season, the Bethany College women's basketball team headed to York College Monday night.
The Swedes played a tight first half, and walked into halftime tied at 32. However, Bethany was unable to slow the York offensive attack, falling 75-59 in their second outing of the season.
Junior Claire Cole scored a team-high 18 points, followed by senior Jade Pihl with 14. Senior Amber Dunham tacked on ten points on the night. Dunham crashed the boards with seven total rebounds, followed by sophomores Rhys Pihl and Nicole Ohnsat with three rebounds each. The Pihl sisters each tallied three assists apiece while Dunham and freshmen Nicole Felker and Emily Dwerlkotte all had two assists each. J. Pihl contributed four steals as R. Pihl added two.
"We did pretty good in the first half and were tied at halftime," said head coach Jim Campion. "We came out in the second half and didn't block out and didn't play defense. Those were two keys. We didn't rebound and the defense didn't do a good job. They really hurt us inside."
The squad returned home and hosted their first home game on Thursday, taking on Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
The Swedes jumped out to an early lead, kicking off the game with an 8-2 run. However, NOSU fought back shortly after and took the lead from there. Down 44-37 at halftime, Bethany pulled within one with 4 minutes left in the game. Thanks to the sharp play running and clutch shooting by NOSU, they went on to defeat the Swedes 83-76.
R. Pihl led the offense with 25 points, followed by sister J. Pihl with 21. Dwerlkotte tacked on ten points. Dunham totaled eight rebounds in the contest as J. Pihl added five. Dwerlkotte and R. Pihl each tallied six assists, and R. Pihl and junior Cathy Wade both had two steals on the night.
"We had a better performance the whole game except again, rebounding hurt us," Campion said. "We were still in it with three minutes left to play, one point down. We had the ball three times and had two turnovers and missed a shot. Rebounding was a key. We gave up too many offensive boards."
Bethany then headed to Ft. Hays State University for a Sunday afternoon exhibition with the NCAA Division II Tigers.
Ft. Hays led 45-29 at half, and the Swedes found themselves behind quickly in the second half as the Tigers jumped out to a 24-2 run. As FHSU shot 55.2 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc, Bethany fell 104-56.
J. Pihl led the Swede offense with ten points as Cole tacked on eight. Dunham and Wade each had a team-high six rebounds.
"In these situations, you just want to get yourself better," said Campion. "Obviously, talent wise, they are much better than we are. So you look at some of the positive things to get ourselves better for our next games."
The Swedes are now 0-3 overall. They next host Concordia University on Wednesday, November 18 and Johnson and Whales University on Saturday, November 21. Tip-offs are set for 6 p.m.
