Lindsborg News-Record
Still looking for their first win of 2009, the Bethany College women's basketball team returned to Lindsborg, hoping their home court would bring them some luck. The Swedes hosted number 22 ranked Concordia University Wednesday night.
Bethany controlled much of the first half, leading by as many as nine at one point, and entered halftime with a 35-30 lead. However, Concordia pulled away with nine minutes remaining and ultimately handed the Swedes a 75-67 loss.
Sophomore Rhys Pihl scored a game-high 27 points, followed by senior Amber Dunham with ten. Senior Jade Pihl and juniors Claire Cole and Cathy Wade all added eight points. R. Pihl grabbed six rebounds and Cole added five as the Swedes were outrebounded 51-40. R. Pihl, Wade, and freshman Emily Dwerlkotte each had three assists on the night as J. Pihl snuck two steals.
The squad rounded out the week by hosting Johnson and Wales University Saturday evening. Bethany jumped out to an early lead thanks in part to an opening 14-2 run. The Swedes went into halftime with a 13-point lead, and the Wildcats would later cut the Swede lead to 11. However, Bethany pulled away in the middle of the second half and grabbed a 78-53 victory for their first win of 2009.
"It was a good win for us," said head coach Jim Campion. "It was really good to get that first win."
R. Pihl had a team-high 23 points, followed by Dwerlkotte with 16. J. Pihl scored 14 points as Cole added 13. Cole, R. Pihl, Dwerlkotte, and sophomore Stephanie Schell all grabbed six rebounds. Dwerlkotte snagged seven steals as Dwerlkotte and J. Pihl each tallied four assists.
"I was happy with our defensive effort for the most part," Campion said. "I was really happy with our offense. We had a lot of people step up and score for us."
Bethany is now 1-4 overall. They traveled to College of Saint Mary on Monday, November 23 at 5:30 p.m.
"We are progressing each game, and we are getting better," said Campion. "We are in a good spot. We just need to get ourselves better every game."
