The Bethany College men and women's indoor track and field team officially began their 2009-2010 campaign this past week. The squad headed to the Kansas State University Multi/Invite Friday and Saturday.

"We had a lot of personal records at K-State," said head coach Aaron Davis.

Sophomore Josh Snider placed 11th in the men's 1000m run with a time of 2:40.65. Freshman Dominic Yegon followed at 14th with a 2:46.59 run.

Junior John Zamora qualified for nationals, placing 12th in the men's 60m dash with a time of 7.11 while freshman Johnny Harris, competing unattached, finished 20th at 7.24. Freshman James Johnson followed at 34th at 7.37 with sophomore Milton Collins behind him at 38th at 7.44.

In the men's 600 yard run, junior Nicholas O'Loughlin took second at 1:15.10. Senior Hugo Escobar placed eighth at 1:17.60 and sophomore Tomas Ortiz finished 17th at 1:20.63. "Nick did well taking second," Davis said, "which is really good at this meet."

Harris finished eighth at 36.28 in the men's 300m dash while Johnson placed 26th with a time of 38.53.

The Bethany ‘B' team placed fourth in the men's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:30.53, followed by the Bethany ‘A' team at tenth at 3:40.19.

"Both 4x4's did well," said Davis. "They ran pretty fast for it being this point in season, considering indoor season doesn't really kick up until January."

Junior Ira Autrey, competing unattached, placed sixth in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.78m. "Ira still made finals even with a hurt ankle," Davis said. "Right now, we're just trying to get him healthy."

On the women's side, in the 1000m run, freshman Janeeka Montgomery finished 14th with a time of 3:32.86. In the women's 60m dash, freshman Meranda Encinias placed tenth with a time of 8.21, followed by sophomore Molly McElgunn at 16th with a time of 8.68.

Sophomore Shane Valdez, competing unattached, set a school record in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 9.79. Junior Jaci Kepler followed, taking 12th after a time of 10.40.

Sophomore Courtney Gallardo finished tenth in the women's 600 yard run after a 1:32.38 performance. Valdez finished 19th in the 300m dash with a time of 47.46. In the women's one mile run, junior Kate Dibbern placed fourth at 5:34.85.

Bethany's ‘A' 4x400m relay team of Gallardo, Encinias, Montgomery, and Kepler placed tenth with a time of 4:25.37.

Part of the Swedes' indoor track and field team also competed at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Saturday.

In men's action, freshman Brian Vanorsby, competing unattached, placed fourth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.20. Freshman Jake Walker followed at sixth place at 7.46.Walker and Vanorsby placed tenth and 11th in the 200m dash with times of 24.74 and 24.75, respectively.

Junior Mathias Dorbayi finished sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:10.48. Freshman Joe Jedrzejewski placed sixth in the 800m run with a time of 2:15.82 while senior Jorge Escobar took fifth in the one mile run with a time of 4:49.51.

Junior Joe King finished 12th in the shot put with a mark of 11.39m.

Junior Jesse Muntz placed second in the men's heptathlon with a mark of 4,540. "Jesse came away with a heptathlon record," Davis said. "He is probably one of the top ten heptathletes in the country and has qualified for nationals."

Back to the women's side, sophomore Courtney Chandler, competing unattached, placed fourth in the women's 60m dash with a time of 8.44. In the women's 200m dash, Chandler, junior Lindsay Grivetti, and freshman Jordan Lillie and Sara Newell placed seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth with times of 29.02, 29.03, 29.47, and 30.01, respectively.

Competing unattached, freshman Ashley Liddell placed third in the women's 400m dash at 1:04.78. In the women's 3000m run, sophomores Nadia Armbruster and Sabrina Scroggin finished seventh and eighth with times of 13:25.40 and 13:29.63, respectively.

Lidell took sixth in the 60m hurdles at 10:41. In the women's high jump, Newell placed fifth with a mark of 1.42m. Grivetti took third in the women's long jump with a mark of 4.58m.

Lillie was crowned champion in the women's pole vault after a performance of 2.99m. "She had a school record, as did Courtney Gallardo," said Davis.

Sophomore Mollie Dahl placed fifth in the women's shot put with a final mark of 12.62m, qualifying for nationals. Senior Gilda Alvarez finished 12th at 10.76m, followed by freshman Heidi Brown at 14th after a mark of 10.45m, a personal record for Brown.

Dahl took 14th in the women's weight throw with a 10.26m performance. Brown followed at 16th with a final mark of 8.76m.

"As far as a first meet, we probably haven't had a first meet better than this in the history of Bethany College track and field," Davis said.

The Swedes next compete at the Missouri Southern Invite in Joplin, Mo. on Friday and Saturday, January 15-16.
