The Bethany College women's basketball team rang in 2010 by competing in the Kansas Wesleyan University Classic in Salina. The Swedes faced off with Dana College Friday evening in their first competition, and their first win, of the new year.
Bethany battled and took control late in the first half with an eight-point lead at halftime. The squad fought to stay afloat, just outscoring Dana in the second half to grab a 65-55 "W."
Sophomore Rhys Pihl had a game-high 17 points, followed by junior Cathy Wade with 16. Senior Jade Pihl added eight points while freshman Emily Dwerlkotte had seven and senior Amber Dunham tacked on six. Wade grabbed ten rebounds as R. Pihl had six. R. Pihl, J. Pihl, and freshman Nicole Felker all contributed three assists and Dwerlkotte snagged three steals.
The Swedes rounded out the tournament with a match-up against Midland Lutheran College Saturday afternoon. In a game that saw eight lead changes, Bethany clung on in the first half and walked into the locker with a two-point lead at halftime. Midland Lutheran made a comeback in the second half, just outscoring the Swedes and out-rebounded the squad 44-29, handing Bethany a 59-56 loss.
"I thought we really played well defensively in both games," said head coach Jim Campion. "We played with intensity and did good things on defense. If we can keep teams in the 50's, we have a chance to win ball games, and that's what we did both games."
R. Pihl had a game-high 20 points while Wade and Dwerlkotte each had ten. Wade and R. Pihl each grabbed five rebounds. Wade, R. Pihl, J. Pihl, and Felker all contributed two assists on the night. Dwerlkotte snuck four steals as Dunham added three.
"I was disappointed in our rebounding in both games," Campion said. "We got out-rebounded in both games by at least 15."
Bethany is now 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the KCAC, sitting at eighth place. The squad continues their conference scheduled on Thursday, January 7 when they host Ottawa University at 6 p.m. The Swedes end the week with a trip to Tabor College on Saturday, January 9 at 5 p.m.
"Overall, I am pretty pleased," said Campion. "I'm disappointed in the loss; it was tight and we were right there. But right now, we are getting better and making some progress."
