After splitting at the KWU Classic New Year's weekend, the Bethany College women's basketball team returned to conference play. The squad opened the week by hosting Ottawa University Thursday night.

Ottawa came out hot from the start and jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead. Dominated in the paint and on both fast break points and bench points, Bethany fought back and outscored the Braves in the second half, but was unable to catch a lead as they fell 64-61.

"We made a lot of mistakes defensively," said head coach Jim Campion, "which allowed Ottawa to get some easy baskets throughout the game."

Sophomore Rhys Pihl scored a game-high 21 points on the night. Freshman Emily Dwerlkotte added 13 points as senior Jade Pihl tacked on ten. Dwerlkotte grabbed eight rebounds, followed by junior Cathy Wade with seven. J. Pihl, R. Pihl, Dwerlkotte, and junior Crysta Stensaas all tallied two assists apiece. Dwerlkotte headed the Bethany defense with four steals as junior Katie Wendland added two.

"The effort was there, but we made mistakes defensively," Campion said.

The Swedes headed to Tabor Saturday evening to close out the week. Fighting to maintain a lead in the first half, Bethany led the Blue Jays at halftime by two points. The Swedes heated up in the second half, shooting over 50% from the field, and went on to snag a 63-52 win.

Wade lit up the night with an impressive 27-point performance as junior Claire Cole tacked on ten. R. Pihl added nine points as Dwerlkotte contributed eight. Wade grabbed seven rebounds as R. Pihl had six. Wade totaled four assists in the contest as Cole and R. Pihl each added three. Cole and Felker led the Swede defense with one steal each.

Bethany is now 2-4 in the KCAC, putting them at sixth place, and 5-11 overall. They next head to cross-town rival Kansas Wesleyan University on Thursday, January 14 at 6 p.m. before hosting Southwestern College on Saturday, January 16 at 5 p.m.
