The Bethany College basketball team kicked off the week with a trip to Salina to face rival Kansas Wesleyan University.

The Swedes hung close with the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan in the first half, and entered the locker room at halftime only down by two. However, KWU outscored Bethany 52-15 in the second half, recording a school record 17 three-pointers, handing the Swedes a 90-51 loss.

"I thought we played a decent first half in the Wesleyan game," said head coach Jim Campion. "It was a two-point game at halftime, and we felt good going in at the half. We came out in the second half and were flat defensively. Offensively, they gave us a different defensive look, and we struggled against the defensive zone, and struggled shooting, and it got away from us."

Sophomore Rhys Pihl scored 15 points, the only Swede in double figures as Bethany was held to 34 percent shooting and 27.3 percent in the second half.

The Swedes finished off the week with a home match-up against Southwestern College Saturday night.

The Moundbuilders came out firing, and never looked back as Bethany struggled to stay afloat in the contest. Down by 19 at the half, the Swedes struggled to break the Southwestern defensive pressure and ended the night with a 77-54 loss.

"Southwestern was good defensively and took us out of a lot of things on offense we wanted to do," Campion said. "And then we didn't shoot well; we didn't make contested shots and missed easy shots. We struggled in the first half, but the second half we did a much better job. We played pretty even and a much better game in the second half."

R. Pihl recorded a game-high 18 points, followed by junior Cathy Wade with 11. Wade and freshman Emily Dwerlkotte each grabbed seven rebounds, and R. Pihl and senior Jade Pihl both tallied two assists. Junior Katie Wendland contributed three steals on the night.

Bethany is now 2-6 in the KCAC, tied for seventh place, and 5-13 overall. The Swedes host the University of St. Mary on Thursday, January 21 at 6 p.m. before traveling to Wichita to battle Friends University on Saturday, January 23 at 5 p.m.
