The Bethany College baseball team opened their 2010 campaign this past weekend. The Swedes headed down to Texas for their opening day doubleheader against Wayland Baptist University.

Wayland Baptist jumped ahead early with a run in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers then extended their lead with a four-run fourth inning. The Swedes answered back with two runs in the fifth, but couldn't muster any more offense as Bethany fell 5-2.

Junior Evan Bloem led the Bethany bats with a 2-for-4 performance. Senior Aaron Larsen and juniors Logan Kanamu, Reynaldo Garcia, Phillip Rowland, and Brian Ladeira all had one hit. Kanuma and Garcia each had one RBI in the contest.

Junior William Phillips got the start for the Swedes, throwing two innings and giving up one run with two strike outs. Senior Christian Martinez came in as relief for one inning with one strikeout before junior Cory Robbins threw four innings, giving up four hits and four runs with four strike outs. Phillips was credited with the loss.

In game two, the Pioneers again got ahead early with a 2-0 lead. The Swedes answered back with one run in the third, but Wayland Baptist found their bats with a six-run fifth inning and went on to down Bethany 8-2.

Kanamu, Garcia, junior Mike Yingling, sophomore J.W. Miller, and freshman Jake Webster all had one hit in game two. Larsen and Miller each tallied one RBI for the Swedes.

Junior Kris Boele got the start for Bethany, giving up five runs in four innings and four strike outs. Junior Jacob Arroyo came in as relief, giving up three runs in two innings and three strike outs.

The final game of the series, scheduled for Sunday afternoon, was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Swedes are now 0-2 overall. Bethany heads to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Saturday and Sunday, February 13-14. The squads face off in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. before ending the series on Sunday with a 12 p.m. contest.
