The Bethany College baseball team, looking for their first "W" of the 2010 campaign after dropping a doubleheader with Wayland Baptist, headed to the undefeated University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma this past weekend. The squad faced USAO on a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Game one was nothing short of a tight and close ball game. The score was tied at one after one inning before USAO took a 2-1 lead in the third. Bethany answered back with three runs in the fourth, but USAO added three more runs. The Swedes took another lead after a two-run fifth, but USAO stayed resilient and tacked on another two runs, and then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Bethany tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, but USAO scored the game-winner in the bottom half of the inning, sweeping the Swedes as they handed them a 9-8 loss.
"Everybody was involved," said head coach Jeremy Cantrell. "We did some good things offensively. We just didn't quite execute enough to win defensively. But on the positive end, everyone was involved. Offensively, we used 13 guys and had some clutch hits, so that was good to see. Our starter did well; he threw three innings this week and two last week. He is our best guy, but we just have to somehow get him to throw further in the game."
Game two was a much different story. USAO got on the board early with a run in the first before their offense hit their stride, tacking on another four runs in the second. The Swedes got on the board in the sixth, but USAO answered back with another five runs. The Swedes answered back with one run in the seventh, but couldn't muster any more as they fell 10-2.
"Their starter was an OU transfer and he's an all-conference pitcher in the conference that had the last two teams playing in the NAIA post-season last year," Cantrell said. "He was dominant through the first five innings. (Senior Ryan) Mashinter threw three and a third shutout innings, which is going to be big for us as we move forward."
The third and final game of the series scheduled for Sunday afternoon was canceled.
Bethany is now 0-4 overall. They next face Briar Cliff University in their home opener on Sunday, February 21. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
