With the thought of spring creeping into the minds of people everywhere, the Bethany College women's tennis team kicked off their season this past weekend with a trip to Nebraska. The squad faced nationally- ranked Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday morning.
 

Nebraska Wesleyan topped the Swedes 7-2 in Bethany's opening match of the season.

In singles competition, senior Nyska Etienne (BC) defeated Zoucha, Lexie (NWU) 7-6, 6-3. In number two singles, Henslee, Chelsea (NWU) beat junior Stacie Schoon (BC) 6-0, 6-4. Maloley, Terah (NWU) handed freshman Valentina Puchakova (BC) a 6-4, 6-2 loss and Dasilva, Andrea (NWU) defeated freshman Monica Chapman (BC) 6-3, 6-1. Dickmeyer, Erica (NWU) beat freshman Olivia Fabrizius (BC) 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in number five singles.

In doubles action, Etienne/Schoon (BC) defeated Zoucha, Lexie/Dasilva, Andrea (NWU) 8-2. Andrews, Molly/Johnson, Vanessa (NWU) beat Puchkova/Clawson (BC) 8-2 in number two doubles. Maloley, Terah/Powers, Taylor (NWU) gave Fabrizius/Kjerstyn Hansen (BC) an 8-3 loss.

The Swedes then faced another nationally ranked team, William Jewell College, and again fell 7-2.

In singles competition, Nikki Chambers (WJC) defeated Nyska Etienne (BC) 6-1, 6-4. Tanya Ratana (WJC) topped Stacie Schoon (BC) 6-0, 6-2. In number three singles, Hana Lindbloom (WJC) beat Valentina Puchkova (BC) 6-3, 6-2. Carli Bisesi (WJC) defeated Olivia Fabrizius (BC) 6-3, 6-4 and Jaimie Baker (WJC) overpowered Monica Chapman (BC) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). In number six singles, sophomore Katelin Clawson (BC)topped Megan Groninger (WJC) 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.

"Katelin Clawson won a hard-fought singles match over Megan Groniger in a third set super tie breaker," said assistant coach Tony Swiantek.

In doubles competition, Etienne/Schoon (BC) def. Chambers/Ratana (WJC) 8-3. In number two soubles, Lindbloom/Baker (WJC) def. Puchkova/Clawson (BC) 8-1. Bisesi/Kelsie George (WJC) def. Fabrizius/Kjerstyn Hansen (BC) 8-3.

"The highlight of the day was the Bethany Number One Doubles Duo of Nyska Etienne and Stacie Schoon," Swiantek said. "They won both matches against very solid doubles teams and they were able to do it in very convincing fashion, dropping only five games combined in both matches. The William Jewell #1 Doubles Team is ranked second in the Region and 12th in the country, and the NWU #1 Doubles Team is ranked 10th in the Region. Nyska and Stacie beat them both easily."

Bethany is now 0-2 overall and next faces Baker University at Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita on Saturday, February 27 at 10 a.m.
