Looking for their first win of 2010, the Bethany College baseball team headed to NCAA Division II Fort Hays State University Thursday afternoon.

The Swedes stayed with FHSU in game one as the contest was tied at one before the Swede bats caught fire in the sixth inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run homer from senior Daryl Schlepp. However, the Tigers posted a comeback as they scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, five of those runs with two outs, handing the Swedes a 9-6 loss.

"I told the team between games that we have to lose the moral victory attitude," said head coach Jeremy Cantrell. "We are playing all right, but I am not satisfied with moral victories; it's not okay just to sit there and say we played tough, but suffer a loss."

Bethany found themselves down by one early in game two, but took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. However, the Swedes lost their lead after a four-run Tiger fifth inning. Bethany added another run in the sixth off a solo home run by junior Phillip Rowland, but could not muster any more as they lost 5-3.

"We played with confidence and intensity and forced them to do the same," Cantrell said. "I think pitching is going to be fine, we are facing better hitters that will prepare us for conference."

The Swedes are now 0-6 overall. With the latest inclement weather, the Swedes are unsure of their schedule this week, but are actively looking for an opportunity to play.

"We're getting games in," Cantrell said. "We are not that far behind in terms of the number of games we have played. The guys are still working hard. They are not discouraged; they see potential in the team, but we just have to put it together. And we know we need to get better."
