Hoping to snap their three-game losing slide, the Bethany College women's basketball team entered their last week of regular season conference play. The Swedes traveled to Southwestern College Thursday night.
Southwestern jumped out to an early lead, and walked into halftime with a four-point lead over the Swedes. The Moundbuilders out-rebounded the Swedes and continued their offensive attack as they handed Bethany a 62-50 loss.
"I was real pleased in the way we played," said head coach Jim Campion. "It was a four-point game for most of the game. It was back and forth until the end. I was pleased with the effort. We still struggled offensively, which was partially due to Southwestern; they played well defensively."
Junior Cathy Wade had a team-high 11 points, followed by senior Jade Piuhl with eight and sophomore Rhys Pihl with seven. Junior Claire Cole snagged seven rebounds as freshman Emily Dwerlkotte had six. J. Pihl and junior Crysta Stensaas each had two assists as J. Pihl and Dwerlkotte each had two steals each.
Bethany closed out their last regular season game at the University of St. Mary Saturday night. The Swedes struggled to stay afloat against the Spires, but were down by ten at the half. Bethany was unable to close the gap despite stronger second half shooting as they fell 58-50.
"It was a tough loss and a close ball game most of the way," Campion said. "We had opportunities to take the lead, but we couldn't get the shot to go down. We played hard and played well second half. We struggled shooting in the first half, but we did much better in the second half."
Wade scored a team-high 15 points as R. Pihl tacked on 14 and J. Pihl added 12. Senior Amber Dunham grabbed seven rebounds as R. Pihl contributed five. J. Pihl tallied five assists as R. Pihl added four. Wade and junior Katie Wendland totaled two steals apiece.
The Swedes are 5-13 in the KCAC, finishing at ninth place, and 8-20 overall. Bethany traveled to the number eight seed University of Saint Mary on Monday, February 22 at 6 p.m. for their first post-season play-in contest.
