The Swedes faced Hastings College Saturday afternoon. In a back and forth game with the Broncos, the Swedes came up with three clutch runs in the top of the seventh to secure a 9-7 victory. Senior Jacquelyn Hernandez led Bethany with a 4-for-5 performance, totaling five RBIs and two runs. Senior Sophomore Stephanie Tyler added three hits as senior Morgan Evans and junior Anita Espinoza added two hits apiece.
Bethany then battled MidAmerica Nazarene Saturday afternoon. MNU got an early 2-0 lead before the Swedes cut the lead to one. MNU added one more run and defeated the Swedes 3-1. Hernandez, Evans, and senior Emily Zimmerman all had one hit in the contest.
The Swedes again faced Hastings College in the final game of Saturday. Bethany had a late 3-2 lead, but the Broncos took a 4-3 lead in the seventh after a double to left field. However, Hernandez scored freshman Brittany Mosqueda in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Freshman Ashley Nicolich laid down a squeeze bunt to score Hernandez and give the Swedes a 5-4 victory. Hernandez totaled two hits as sophomore Kellyn Peters, Mosqueda, and Nicolich had one hit each.
"On Saturday, we did a pretty good job coming back," said head coach Janice Esses. "We worked from behind and didn't just give up."
On Sunday, the Swedes then faced St. Gregory University in an afternoon double header. The SGU bats proved too strong for the Swedes, hitting six home runs. Up 6-2, SGU added six more runs late in the game to defeat Bethany 12-2. After a two-out Zimmerman walk, Espinoza cranked a two-run home run for the Swedes' only runs.
Bethany closed out the day by jumping out to an early lead after a three-run first inning. The Swedes had a 5-4 lead in the fourth before the SGU bats again came through, defeating Bethany 8-5. Evans, Hernandez, and freshman Miranda Mickelson tallied two hits in the contest as freshman Brittany Lewis, Espinoza, and Peters had one hit. Mickelson tacked on an RBI as Tyler had one RBI off a sacrifice fly.
"For our first games out, we saw some good things," Esses said, "and saw things we kind of need to work on a little bit more. We need to be more consistent at the plate."
The Swedes are now 2-3 overall. The squad next heads to the Friends University Tournament in Wichita on Friday and Saturday, March 5-6.
