Coming off their first games of 2010, the Bethany College softball team again traveled to Wichita to compete in the Friends University Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Swedes came out Friday morning and battled Morningside College. The Swedes were down 3-1 in the sixth inning before struggled errors proved to be the difference in the game as Bethany fell 9-1.
Freshman Miranda Mickelson had two hits in the game as seniors Morgan Evans and Emily Zimmerman and freshmen Brittany Lewis and Brittany Mosqueda all had one hit.
Bethany then faced Central Methodist University. CMU jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Swedes tied the game in the sixth. However, CMU hit a home run in the top of the seventh to hand Bethany a 5-4 loss.
Senior Jacquelyn Hernandez led Bethany with a 2-for-4 performance. Sophomore Stephanie Tyler, junior Anita Espinoza, sophomore Kellyn Peters, Lewis, and Mosqueda all had one hit each. Peters' hit totaled two RBIs to tie the game.
The Swedes ended Friday with a match-up against Doane College. Bethany grabbed a quick 3-0 lead before Doane closed the gap. However, the Swedes, who scored in all but two innings, went on a late run and snagged a 10-5 victory.
Zimmerman led the Swedes with two doubles and two singles and four RBIs. Tyler had two hits and a sacrifice fly in the contest. Evans, Hernandez, Mickelson, Lewis, and Mosqueda all had one hit apiece.
Bethany came out Saturday afternoon for a contest against Dana College. After the game was tied at one, Dana mustered a comeback and despite giving up nine hits to the Swedes, Dana held Bethany to 10 strikeouts, handing the Swedes a 4-2 loss.
Hernandez, Mosqueda, and junior Britany Brady had two hits in the game as Lewis and Zimmerman each had one hit.
