After their first win of 2010 against Benedictine College, the Bethany College baseball team returned to the field on Monday, March 1 with a match-up against Morningside College.

Morningside and Bethany found themselves tied at two after the first inning. The Swede bats found their sweet spot as they added two runs in the second and three in the third. However, Morningside's offense was consistent, scoring in the second, third, fifth, and tied the game in the seventh. The Morningside bats caught fire with a five-run ninth inning, but the Swedes proved resilient as they scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk away with a 12-11 extra-inning victory.

Senior Daryl Schlepp led Bethany with a 4-for-6 performance, tallying four RBIs and four runs. Senior Aaron Larsen and junior Logan Kanamu tacked on two hits while juniors Phillip Rowland and Evan Bloem and freshman Curtis Clayton added one hit each. Kanamu and junior Reynaldo Garcia each had three RBIs as Rowland and freshman Jake Webster had one RBI apiece.

Larsen pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, and seven strike outs. Junior Cory Robbins threw an inning in relief as seniors Christian Martinez and Bryan Wojtkiewicz came in as relief. Junior Alex Fambrough closed out the game and picked up the win in the Swedes' comeback.

Bethany ended the week by hosting a four-game series with Concordia University on Saturday and Sunday.

The Swedes started Saturday on a high-note as the Bethany bats hit their stride, sending the squad on to a 4-1 victory over Concordia.

Bethany kept their momentum in game two. Despite a late threat by Concordia, the Swedes held on for a 3-2 "W."

Concordia came back Sunday morning and played another close game with the Swedes. However, Bethany was able to add another chalk mark to their win column as they walked away with a 7-6 victory in game three of the series.

In the final game of the series, the Bethany bats caught fire as the Swedes hit their stride and handed Concordia a 9-1 loss.

The Swedes are now 6-7 overall. They next host a double header with Benedictine College on Wednesday, March 10 at 1 p.m. before traveling to Austin College on Saturday, March 13 for one nine-inning game at 7 p.m.

"We are playing good, fundamental baseball for the most part," said head coach Jeremy Cantrell. "We got four wins. We played hard, and played pretty consistent throughout the weekend. I know the guys are excited, and that's important."
