As March has finally arrived, the Bethany College golf team kicked off their 2010 campaign by hosting the Swede Invite on Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9 at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson and Salina Elks Golf Course in Salina.
Bethany split into two teams, Bethany and Bethany 2, consisting of five players each. The Swedes got their 2010 campaign started off on the right foot as the Bethany team was crowned tournament champions with an overall score of 578.
"It was a good start to our spring season as we had several good scores turned in," said head coach and Bethany College athletic director Jon Daniels, "and it is always nice to begin the spring with a win. There were a couple of schools ahead of us in the rankings so that will help us out."
Senior Thomas Fernandes tied for second after shooting a 142 in the tournament. Sophomore Jack Hiscock finished fourth at 144, followed by freshman Chris McManus in seventh after shooting a 146. Junior Brock Bullard, who shot 148, placed 10th as senior Leslie Binvillain tied for 16thwith a score of 152.
Bethany 2 placed fourth at the Invite with a score of 609. Junior Mark Bengtson tied for fifth after shooting a 145. Junior Adam Glover finished tied for 31st with a 155, followed by sophomore Ethan Miller tying for 35th at 156. Freshmen Tyler Maydue placed 42nd after shooting 157 as Andries Steyn tied for 46th with a score of 159.
"Our second round when the worst score which we threw out was a 70 and that is the lowest round we have ever had to throw out," Daniels said. "We still have a lot of work ahead of us if we are going to play with the top 10 teams."
The Swedes next travel to Texas Wesleyan in Westworth Village, Tex. for a tournament at Hawk Creek on Sunday and Monday, March 14-15.
"I was proud of the way the guys played in the second round to come back and win the tournament," said Daniels. "They are a great bunch of young men and certainly make me a better coach."
