Fresh off a trip to NAIA Indoor Nationals, the Bethany College outdoor track and field team kicked off their season. The Swedes competed in the McPherson Invite on Saturday.
"The women's team was the highlight." said head coach Aaron Davis. "All of the throwing events were won by Bethany and we also put multiple athletes in the top six in each field event. (Sophomore) Mollie Dahl in shot, (senior) Amber Dunham in shot and javelin, and (junior) Jackie Rodgers in the hammer all qualified for nationals."
Sophomore Shane Valdez was crowned champion in the women's triple jump. Valdez also placed second in both the women's hurdles and long jump.
"Shane is one of the hardest workers and she is surprising a lot of people in the KCAC," Davis said.
Junior Kate Dibbern set a personal record in the women's 1500m, winning the event by 11 seconds. Sophomore Courtney Gallardo took on seven events, placing in all seven.
"We are gearing her up for the KCAC," said Davis. "I can't explain to you how tough she is."
Junior Lindsay Grivetti finished second in the women's high jump, setting a person record by six inches.
"In the track world, that is huge," Davis said. "That's huge for us! Also, our girls 4x4 and 4x1 did very well and took second and third."
In addition, freshman Jordan Lillie broke the school record for the second time in the pole vault with a personal record of 10-6.
On the men's side, junior Jesse Muntz set a personal record in the pole vault, taking second place.
"(Junior) Nick O'Loughlin and (sophomore) Milton Collins did very well in the 200m and sit 1-2 in the KCAC," said Davis.
Bethany next heads to the Friends Invite on Saturday, April 3.
