The Bethany College baseball team, fresh off a sweep of USM in their first conference series, looked to add another chalk mark to the "W" column as they faced Emporia State University Tuesday evening.
Emporia State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one before the Swedes got on the board with a four-run fourth. However, the Hornets answered back with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and two in the sixth. Bethany made a late run with a three-run seventh inning, but could not muster any more as they fell 11-7.
Junior Evan Bloem and freshman Curtis Clayton led the Bethany bats with two hits as seniors Daryl Schlepp and Aaron Larsen, juniors Mike Yingling, Reynaldo Garcia, and Phillip Rowland, and freshman Jake Webster all had one hit apiece. Bloem and Garcia totaled three RBIs each as Clayton tacked on one.
Senior Bryan Wojtkiewicz got the start for Bethany, giving up two earned runs off three hits. Junior Alex Fambrough came in as relief, giving up two hits and three earned runs. Junior William Phillips then came in as relief and gave up five earned runs off six hits.
Game two was all Emporia State as they posted a five-run first inning. The Hornets added one run in the third and four in the fifth, out-hitting the Swedes 14-4 and handing Bethany a 10-0 loss.
Larsen led the Swedes with two hits as Yingling and Rowland each added one.
"Emporia State is obviously a very good ball club," said head coach Jeremy Cantrell. "This prepared us for conference and we will move forward. It was a good challenge for our guys and we competed."
Junior Kris Boele got the start for Bethany, allowing five earned runs off five hits. Senior Christian Martinez came in as relief and held the Hornets scoreless before junior Logan Kanamu gave up two hits and one earned run. Junior Jacob Arroyo did not allow Emporia State to score, giving up only one hit before Rowland allowed four earned runs off five hits. Larsen then took the mound, allowing one hit but no earned runs.
The Swedes then aimed to stay undefeated in the KCAC as they hosted Tabor College Friday evening.
In game one, Bethany controlled much of the pace, holding Tabor to four runs. The Swedes went on to win 6-4.
Game two proved to not be as lucky for the Swedes as Tabor turned the tables on Bethany. The Swedes struggled offensively as the Blue Jays held them to two runs, defeating Bethany 6-2.
"Kris Boele threw a great game in game one," Cantrell said. "Tabor is a good ball club. We made some mistakes in the second game and they did a good job taking advantage of it."
Bethany was scheduled to finish the series with the Blue Jays by traveling to Hillsboro Saturday afternoon, but the contest was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Swedes are 5-1 in the KCAC, at second place, and 12-13 overall. Bethany travels Tabor on today (March 29) before they host Manhattan Christian College Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Swedes next travel to Ottawa University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader April1. Bethany ends the conference series with Ottawa by hosting a doubleheader with the Braves on Saturday, April 3 at 2 p.m.
