The Bethany College baseball team closed their conference series against Tabor College with a trip to Hillsboro Monday afternoon.
Game one proved to be an offensive shootout. The Swedes scored three runs in the second before Tabor posted a 17-run second inning. Despite five more Swede runs, Bethany was unable to close the gap further as they lost 19-8.
Junior Evan Bloem led the Bethany bats with three hits, followed by seniors Aaron Larsen and Jeremy Craig and juniors Phillip Rowland and Brian Ladeira with two hits each. Bloem totaled four RBIs while Craig added two. Larsen and Rowland each had one RBI.
Senior Ryan Mashinter got the start for Bethany, giving up nine earned runs off eight hits. Senior Brian Wojtkiewicz came in as relief, giving up eight hits and six earned runs.
Bethany again jumped out to an early lead in game two, but Tabor retaliated and took a 3-2 lead. A five-run fifth inning for the Blue Jays proved too much for the Swedes as they lost 8-3.
Larsen, Rowland, Bloem, Craig, senior Daryl Schlepp, juniors Mike Yingling, Logan Kanamu, and Reynaldo Garcia, and sophomore J.W. Miller added one hit apiece. Yingling posted two RBIs as Kanamu contributed one.
Larsen got the start on the mound, allowing four earned runs off seven hits. Juniors William Phillips came in as relief, giving up two earned runs off two hits before Alex Fambrough closed out the game by holding Tabor scoreless.
The Swedes then hosted Manhattan Christian College Tuesday evening.
Bethany found themselves down early in the game, but took a 2-1 lead in the fourth before adding two more in the sixth. Manhattan Christian posted a two-run seventh, but the Bethany bats tacked on another run in the eighth to secure a 6-3 "W."
Garcia totaled three hits on the night as Rowland, Ladeira, and freshman Jake Webster added two hits each. Larsen, Bloem, and Yingling contributed one hit apiece. Garcia tallied two RBIs while Ladeira, Webster, and Yingling each had one.
Freshman Curtis Clayton got the start for the Swedes, giving up one earned run off six hits. Junior Cory Robbins came in as relief, holding Manhattan Christian scoreless before senior Christian Martinez allowed two earned runs off four hits. Rowland closed the game with a scoreless inning.
Bethany continued their KCAC schedule with a road trip to Ottawa University on Thursday.
After Ottawa jumped to an early 2-0 lead, the Swedes tied the game in the second, but the Braves took a 4-2 lead later that inning. Bethany hung close before Ottawa posted an eight-run fourth inning as the Braves defeated Bethany in a 13-2 run rule.
Larsen led the Bethany bats with two hits while Garcia, Ladeira, and Kanamu contributed one hit apiece. Kanamu had the lone Swede RBI.
Junior Kris Boele got the start on the mound, allowing 13 earned runs off 11 hits.
The Swedes hopped out to a 2-0 lead early in game two before the Braves hit their stride with a seven-run third inning. However, Bethany showed their resilience with four runs in the fifth and sixth and two more in the seventh, going on to a 13-0 win over Ottawa.
Bloem totaled four hits in the contest as Ladeira and Schlepp added three. Yingling, Kanamu, and Cayton contributed two hits apiece as Rowland had one. Ladeira posted five RBIs as Schlepp had two and Rowland, Bloem, Kanamu, and Clayton had one RBI apiece.
Junior Jacob Arroyo started for the Swedes, allowing six earned runs off eight hits. Freshman Zach Foster, Phillips, and Fambrough came in as relief, each giving up one earned run off one hit.
The Swedes faced the Braves at home on Saturday to finish the series.
Ottawa started off hot with a five-run first inning, but the Swedes tied the contest in the second. However, the Braves plated four more runs in the third and did not stop there. Errors plagued the Swedes, committing eight, as Ottawa went on to defeat Bethany 16-5.
Larsen, Schlepp, Garcia, Rowland, Bloem, Ladeira, Clayton, and Webster all had one hit in the contest. Larsen tallied two RBIs as Yingling and Clayton each had one.
Mashinter got the start for the Swedes, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs in four innings pitched.Wojtkiewicz came in as relief, allowing two earned runs off two hits.
The Swedes got off to a strong start in game two, taking a 5-2 lead. Ottawa tied the game in the fourth before Bethany posted a five-run sixth inning, defeating the Braves 11-6.
Ladeira led the Swedes with three hits, followed by Larsen and Garcia with two. Schlepp, Yingling, Rowland, Bloem, and Kanamu each contributed one hit. Ladeira totaled four RBIs in the contest as Larsen, Yingling, and Garcia posted two each.
Martinez started on the mound for Bethany, allowing two earned runs off four hits. Phillips came in as relief, holding the Braves scoreless.
Bethany is now 7-5 in the KCAC, at fourth place, and 15-17 overall. They hosted Manhattan Christian College Tuesday afternoon and next travel to Friends University in Wichita on Friday, April 9 for a 5 p.m. doubleheader. The squad returns home on Saturday, April 10 to close out the series with a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
