Fresh off a sweep over Sterling, the Bethany College softball team headed to Wichita to battle Friends University Wednesday evening.

The Swedes jumped out to an early lead over the Falcons as they plated one run in the second. However, Friends pushed two runs in the fourth before the Swedes tied the game in the top of the fifth.

Bethany put together a late offensive run and scored two runs in the seventh before holding the Falcons scoreless as the Swedes squeaked out a 4-2 victory.

The Falcons came soaring back in game two, tallying a six-run second inning. The Swedes tapped out hits, but struggled to advance runners as Friends held Bethany scoreless and went on to defeat the Swedes 8-0 in a six-inning run rule.

Bethany ended the week with a home doubleheader against McPherson College.

The Swedes grabbed an early 1-0 lead, but found themselves down late in the game as McPherson plated two runs in the fifth. However, Bethany answered back with a two-run sixth inning before holding McPherson scoreless in the seventh as the Swedes went on to a 3-2 "W."

Senior Morgan Evans led the Bethany bats with a 3-for-3 performance, scoring two runs for the Swedes off two squeeze bunts by freshman Brittany Lewis. Senior Emily Zimmerman had an RBI single in the game.

Tyler got the start and win for Bethany, allowing nine hits and one earned run.

In game two, Bethany again got out to an early lead with one run in the first before plating another in the fifth. The Swedes tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 4-0 victory over McPherson.

Lewis doubled and homered in the game, tallying two RBIs as senior Jacquelyn Hernandez had an RBI double.

Senior Becka Hileman started on the mound and took home the win for Bethany, throwing a three-hit shutout.

"This week in practice we focused on scoring runners in scoring position and focused on putting the ball in play and advancing runners," said head coach Janice Esses. "That helped us this week, but it is something we still need to work on. We are still leaving runners on. We're getting hits, but are struggling on stringing hits together. Our pitchers, especially against McPherson, played well. We are still working on taking care of the ball on defense."

The Swedes are now 6-2 in the KCAC, at third place, and 13-12 overall. The squad faced Kansas Wesleyan University on the road on Tuesday, April 13. Bethany next hosts a doubleheader against Central Christian College on Friday, April 16 at 5 p.m.
