After a split against Ottawa University, the Bethany college baseball team headed to Manhatan Christian College on Tuesday, April 6.

Bethany set the tempo of the game with a seven-run first inning. Manhattan Christian cut the lead to four after two runs in the first and one in the second. The Swedes answered back with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth before sealing the victory with a six-run sixth inning, defeating Manhattan Christian 19-5.

 

Junior Logan Kanamu and freshman Jake Webster led the Bethany bats with three hits apiece, followed by senior Aaron Larsen and juniors Brian Ladeira, Reynaldo Garcia, Phillip Rowland, and Evan Bloem, who added two hits each. Junior Mike Yingling, sophomores Patrick Wenger and Vic Clark, and freshmen Trenton Terrill, Zach Dovenbarger, and Curtis Clayton each contributed one hit. Kanamu tallied five RBIs in the contest as Bloem tacked on three. Larsen, Ladeira, Rowland, and Webster each totaled two RBIs as Yingling, Terrill, and senior Jeremy Craig had one apiece.

Senior Brian Wojtkiewicz got the start, allowing two earned runs off three hits. Juniors Cory Robbins, Alex Fambrough, and Clayton came in as relief, holding Manhattan Christian scoreless.

The Swedes then headed to Friends University in Wichita for a Friday evening doubleheader.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before the Swedes cut the gap to one. Bethany used a three-run fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. However, Friends scored one run in the fifth and tied the game in the seventh, forcing extra innings. The Swedes plated two runs in the tenth before holding Friends scoreless as Bethany defeated the Falcons 7-5.

Larsen, Yingling, Rowland, and Clayton had two hits each in the contest. Larsen, Yingling, and Bloem tallied two RBIs apiece as Clayton had one.

Junior Kris Boele got the start for the Swedes, giving up four earned runs on nine hits. Junior William Phillips came in as relief, holding Friends scoreless before Fambrough entered the game and allowed one earned run. Senior Christian Martinez closed the game, allowing three hits and zero earned runs, and received the win.

The Swedes came out and got a quick 2-0 lead in game two before adding two more runs in the fifth. Friends began a comeback with a one-run seventh, but Bethany hung on for a 4-1 win.

Bloem and senior Daryl Schlepp led the Bethany bats with two hits each. Bloem, Schlepp, and Kanamu each tallied one RBI.

Junior Jacob Arroyo got the start and win for the Swedes, allowing zero earned runs on six hits.

Bethany closed out the series with a home doubleheader against the Falcons.

After Friends grabbed an early 1-0 lead, Bethany answered back with two runs of their own. After the game was tied going into the bottom of the fourth, the Swedes plated seven runs and went on to a 10-5 victory.

Bloem contributed two hits as Larsen, Ladeira, Garcia, Rowland, and Clayton each had one. Garcia tallied four RBIs as Rowland tacked on three and Ladeira, Yingling, and Bloem totaled one apiece.

Senior Ryan Mashinter got the start, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Robbins came in as relief, allowing two hits and zero earned runs.

In game two, Bethany had a narrow 2-1 lead before a five-run Swede fourth helped Bethany defeat Friends 8-1.

Rowland led the Swedes with three hits as senior Jeremy Craig and Yingling had two each. Garcia tallied three RBIs as Yingling had two and Rowland, Kanamu, and Clayton each had one.

Larsen got the start and win for the Swedes, allowing one earned run on three hits.

"We did a good job of staying focused and playing the game the right way," said head coach Jeremy Cantrell. "We need to continue to do that to end the year the right way."

The Swedes are now 11-5 in the KCAC, at second place, and 20-17 overall. Bethany hosts a doubleheader against rival Kansas Wesleyan University on Thursday, April 15 at 5 p.m. The Swedes then face the Coyotes in a doubleheader in Salina on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
