Looking to extend their eight game winning streak, the Bethany College softball team hosted KCAC first-place Ottawa University on Wednesday, April 21.
The Swedes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Braves tied the game in the third. However, Bethany answered back with a run in the bottom of the third before Ottawa again tied the game in the fourth. The Braves took a 4-3 lead in the sixth before a three-run seventh inning. The Swedes were unable to muster a comeback as they fell 7-3.
Freshman Brittany Lewis led the Bethany bats with two hits as seniors Morgan Evans and Jacquelyn Hernandez and freshmen Lindsey Dougal, Ashley Nicolich, and Nicole Felker added one hit each. Dougal totaled two RBIs in the contest.
Sophomore Stephanie Tyler got the start for Bethany, giving up six earned runs off nine hits. Senior Becka Hileman came in as relief, holding the Braves scoreless.
Ottawa opened game two with a three-run third inning before the Swedes pulled within one. The Braves extended their lead to 4-2 in the second before Bethany cut the lead to one in the fourth. Ottawa answered back with a run in the fifth, but again the Swedes plated one run. However, Bethany was unable to grab a lead as they lost 5-4.
Evans and Lewis each had two hits as Hernandez, junior Anita Espinoza, and freshman Brittany Mosqueda added one hi apiecet. Lewis tallied three RBIs in the contest while Espinoza had one RBI on her solo home run.
Hileman started for the Swedes, allowing two earned runs off eight hits.
The squad ended their KCAC regular season with a trip to Tabor College on Saturday.
Bethany jumped out to an early lead in game one before Tabor tied the game at one in the bottom of the first. The Blue Jays tacked on another run in the second inning. However, Bethany formed a comeback as Hernandez hit a three-run home run, the first home run of her career, to put the Swedes up 4-2. Bethany added another run before Tabor began a comeback, but the Blue Jays could not regain their lead as Bethany went on to a 5-4 "W." Tyler got the start and win for Bethany.
The Bethany bats came out hot in game two and tallied a 9-3 lead over Tabor by the third inning. The Swedes never relinquished their lead as they defeated the Blue Jays 13-4. Hileman picked up the start and win for Bethany.
The Swedes end the regular season 12-4 in the KCAC at third place, and are 21-14 overall. The squad traveled to MidAmerican Nazarene University on Monday, April 26 for an evening doubleheader. Bethany next competes in the KCAC Conference Tournament on Thursday and Friday, April 29-30 at Tabor College in Hillsboro.
