JUNCTION CITY, KS - Bethany College completed yet another comeback in the KCAC Baseball Championship Tournament by beating Ottawa University in come from behind fashion 9-7 on Friday night. With the win, Bethany advances to the KCAC Championship on Sunday in Junction City, Kansas at historic Rathert Stadium at 3:00 p.m. If a second game is needed to decide the championship, that game would be played one hour following the conclusion of the 3:00 p.m. game.
Ottawa University came out hot in the bottom of the first inning of tonight's game, scoring two runs in the first inning. The first run came on a wild pitch by Bethany starter Aaron Larsen, and the second run came from a Jon Breedlove single. At the end of the first inning, Ottawa lead Bethany 2-0.
Ottawa was able to score again in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring on an error, a sacrifice, and a wild pitch.
Bethany struggled during the first half or more of the game. Ottawa pitching was able to shutout the Swedes for six straight innings. Bethany began their comeback in the top of the seventh inning, bringing about feelings of déjà vu from Wednesday night's opening ballgame. Reynaldo Garcia started the Swedes with a two run homerun down the right field line. The third Bethany run for the inning came on a wild pitch. At the end of the seventh, Ottawa led 5-3.
Bethany continued their amazing comeback in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on five hits in the inning. Jake Webster had the big hit for the Swedes in the inning, getting two RBI's from a well hit single.
Ottawa added two runs in the bottom of the night, but were unable to overcome Cory Robbins, who closed out the game for Bethany.
Bethany's starter was Larsen. Larsen pitched 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on five hits with only two earned runs.
Ottawa's starter was Jake Kissner who pitched 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits.
The winning pitcher was Brian Wojikiewicz from Bethany. The losing pitcher was Steve Marks. Robbins was credited with the save.
Game time Sunday is 3:00 p.m. with the second game following one hour after the conclusion of the first if it is needed. Bethany College will face Kansas Wesleyan University. To win the KCAC Baseball Championship Tournament, Bethany would have to take two in a row from Kansas Wesleyan.
