TARAFA BRINGS HOME 4; SWEDES FALL IN SEASON OPENER

Bethany, Okla. – The Bethany College Swedes Baseball team opened their season on the road in Bethany, Okla. for the first two games of a three-game series with the Southwestern Christian University Eagles on their home field.

GAME 1: SWEDES 1, EAGLES 6

The Swedes' opener was not quite what they hoped it would be as Bethany only recorded three hits, one being an RBI double by Will Sanchez to score Fernando Bones in the sixth inning.

On the defensive side, Bones teamed up Adrian Rodriguez, and Conner Balmer teamed up for a 643 double play to close out the fifth inning.

Wesly Martinez drew the opening game start lasting 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and three runs while also striking out three. Christian Gonzalez relieved the final two innings striking out three as well.

GAME 2: SWEDES 6, EAGLES 13

Eduardo Tarafa broke the seal with a two-RBI double scoring Yan Ortiz and Conner Balmer in the second inning to put the Swedes up 2-0. Following the Eagles' three runs in the third inning, Julio Chavira would bring in two more runs with a single to center field scoring Tarafa and Balmer to put the Swedes back in front 4-3. In response, the Eagles would score five in the next half inning. Eduardo Tarafa's next at-bat would be a two-RBI double to right field scoring Conner Balmer (his third score of the contest) and Manny Gonzalez to cut the deficit to 6-8. In the end, the Swedes would fall 6-13.

Eduardo Tarafa could do nothing wrong as he went two-for-two with four RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. Conner Balmer went two-for-two, three runs scored, and a walk. Yan Ortiz and Balmer teamed up for a double play in the third.

Joseph Guzman drew the start and went 2.0 innings allowing three hits, three walks, and one run while striking out one. Jose Fajardo had the best outing of the five relief pitchers lasting 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out one.

Up Next…

The Swedes will have a bit of a break as their next games are in Fort Worth, Texas where they will take on the Jarvis Christian University Bulldogs on Saturday, January 31, at 12:00 PM and 3:30 PM. The next day, the Swedes will take on the Texas Wesleyan University Rams in the same city for another doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
