Lindsborg, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes Baseball team were scheduled to play the Peru State College Bobcats in what was supposed to be a three-game series on Phillip Anderson Baseball Field. Due to cold weather, and a bit of snow, the series was cut to just two games; one seven-inning contest on Saturday, February 21, and one nine-inning contest on Sunday, February 22.
GAME 1: SWEDES 4, BOBCATS 6
Game one started off well for the Swedes as Trenton Verplank singled home Conner Balmer in the second inning to break the scoreless tie. The Bobcats would answer back loudly with six runs over the course of innings four and five. The Swedes would clap back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, but it wouldn't be enough as the Bobcats would escape game one with a 6-4 victory.
Adrian Rodriguez had himself a game recording three of the Swedes' eight hits. Verplank, Manny Gonzalez, and Yan Ortiz each tallied one RBI.
Wesley Martinez drew the start lasting 4.1 innings allowing five hits and five earned runs while striking out four. Abraham Ortiz made his Swedes debut to close out the final 2.2 innings allowing just one hit while striking out five.
GAME 2: SWEDES 13, BOBCATS 2
The Swedes capitalized on the Bobcats' mistakes and the latter had six errors throughout the contest. Those six errors equated to six unearned runs in favor of the Swedes as Bethany would roll to a 13-2 run-rule finish in seven innings.
Four Swedes recorded multiple hits in this one. Daniel Barker and Fabian Dumey each tallied three hits as Dumey brought home four base runners. Fernando Bones went two-for-three with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk drawn. Julio Chavira touched home plate three times while courtesy running for Dumey, the catcher.
Joseph Guzman drew his second start of the season lasting 4.0 innings allowing six hits and striking out three. Austin Arrocha continued to dominate opposing batters allowing just two hits and striking out four in 2.0 innings of work. Christian Gonzalez closed out the contest with allowing no hits, one walk, and struck out two.
Up Next…
The Swedes will return to conference play as they are set to take on the York University Panthers at home on Tuesday, February 24, at 1:00 PM on Phillip Anderson Field in a single nine-inning contest.
