SWEDES STRUGGLE AGAINST NO. 8 RANKED TEAM
Winfield, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes Football team opened up the season against the Southwestern College Moundbuilders at their place Saturday night.
The Swedes could not catch a break throughout the game as the Moundbuilders were able to score on all but 2 possessions en route to a 65-0 win showing why they were the No. 8 ranked team in the nation.
Bethany did have flashes of brilliance throughout the game. In the 1st quarter, freshman quarterback Alec Giragosian was able to connect with senior running back J.J. Allen on a short throw that turned into a 30-yard gain. Jaylin Talbot, senior defensive back, was able to force a turnover with an interception on the Bethany 17-yard line in the second quarter. Also, in the second quarter, senior quarterback Nick Truelove was able to connect with sophomore wideout Brock Burnette for a 15-yard gain. In the third quarter, Allen was able to explode for a 35-yard rush before being pushed out of bounds.
J.J. Allen led the Swedes' offense in both rushing and receiving tallying 98 total offensive yards (60 rushing, 38 receiving). Senior wide receiver Aaron Tillak tied Allen with 3 catches to lead the team.
Sophomore linebacker Julian Carpenter led the Swedes in solo tackles with 7 as well as total tackles with 10. Freshman Donald Squires and senior Luke Krajicek, both defensive linemen, were each able to lead the team in tackles for loss with 1 apiece. Freshman defensive back Kam'ron Brown recorded the only pass break-up for the Swedes.
