SWEDES GET BY OTTAWA
Lindsborg, Kan. - The Swedes hosted the Ottawa University Braves for their fourth conference match-up of the season. A high scoring first half led to the Swedes securing a win against the Braves.
The Swedes started off firing on all cylinders, making the score 10-0 in the first ninety seconds of the game with a pair of 3's by Justin Brookens and two hoops at the rim by Solomon Clayton. Another ten point run got them a twenty-two point lead 28-6 with 9:45 left in the first half. The Swedes kept up the pace finishing the first half up by eighteen points 50-32.
But the Swedes eased off the gas in the second half as the Braves caught fire from downtown and trimmed the huge lead down to a deuce, 82-80, with 4:04 left on the clock. With the pressure on, Clayton and Brookens gave the Swedes enough cushion to weather the storm. Ottawa had pulled within two points but Brookens hit a deep 3, was fouled on the shot leading to a four point play. Followed by a turnover that gave Clayton a path to the rim and an 88-80 lead with 3:23 left. Donovan Newton helped keep the lead with a layup and a free throw, making the score 91-83 with 1:56 on the clock.
The Swedes got 63 points from their three leading scorers, Brookens 22, Dylan Smith 21, and Clayton 20. Donovan Newton continues to turn into a valuable asset off the bench as he scored 19.
Bethany forced 15 turnovers on the Braves resulting in scoring 19 points. They also had 40 rebounds and a shooting percentage of 52.0 compared to the Braves shooting percentage of 42.9. The victory improved Bethany to 2-2 in conference action, and 6-3 overall.
