BETHANY LOSES IN KCAC QUARTER FINAL AGAINST NO. 22 SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE
Winfield, Kan. - Bethany College Men's Basketball traveled to Southwestern College to play in the KCAC Quarter Finals of the 2022-23 season. The Swedes fifteen point lead was not enough to secure a win in the house of the Moundbuilders. Southwestern came back and won the game 84-78.
The game was scoreless until the clock showed 17:35 and the Moundbuilders got on the board with a free throw. Swedes did the same 22 seconds later. Southwestern had rhythm the first ten minutes of the game until Justin Brookens made a layup and put the Swedes up 14-12. Donovan Newton followed up with a layup of his own as Brookens then shot and made a three, making the score 19-13.
The Swedes had the lead until minute 4:28 showed as the Moundbuilders made all 3 free throws from a foul and tied it up at 29. After a 30 second timeout by the Swedes Jah-Kez Moore answered back with a 3 point shot from downtown, regaining the lead 32-31. A tip in and a few layups later the Swedes were up 40-33 with less than a minute left on the stop clock. At the half the Swedes left the court up 41-36.
The Swedes came back out on the wood firing on all cylinders as they went on an eight point run. Solomon Clayton started business with a layup, followed up with a three point shot by Moore, a layup by Dylan Smith, and a free throw made by Brookens. Bethany kept the momentum going and worked up a 15 point lead with 15:28 left on the scoreboard.
Despite the 15 point deficit the Moundbuilders did not give in, they chipped away and made their way back in the game. Bethany kept a healthy double digit lead until Southwestern scored a layup at 7:52 and made the score 71-63. The Moundbuilders tied the game up,73-73, at 4:01 with a tip in. Newton made a layup but Southwestern tied it up again at 75. Southwestern took the lead with a layup, 77-75 with 2:42 left of the game. Newton came up big and tied the game up with a layup and a good free throw at 78 with 53 seconds left on the clock. Southwestern would then make a layup, a couple good free throws, and a dunk to end the game at 84-78.
Justin Brookens scored 23 points making 2 three point shots, 3 free throws, 3 assists, and 7 jump shots. Solomon Clayton scored 17 points, had 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks to help the Swedes. Donovan Newton came off the bench to score 16 points making 7 jumpshots, 2 free throws, had 5 steals, and had 3 assists.
Swedes shot 78% from the free throw line and forced 17 turnovers on the Moundbuilders, leading to 21 made points. Bethany's bench came in and scored 18 points to help the Swedes. The Swedes finished conference play 14-8.
