SWEDE SOFTBALL COMPLETES THIRD SWEEP OF THE SEASON
Winfield, Kan. - The warmest day of the year so far made for great softball weather as the Bethany College Softball team traveled to play the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. The Swedes played sound softball and returned home with 2 wins.
Game 1
The Swedes scored first in the top of the second inning when Myranda Jimenez hit a triple to the right side. Allison Rosa brought Jimenez home with a sac fly hit to center field, making the score 1-0.
The Moundbuilders responded in the bottom of the fourth inning by pushing a run across the board and tying up the game, 1-1. Bethany did not score again until the top of the fifth inning when Lilliana Martinez hit a base hit up the middle, scoring Kierstyn McMillen from second base, 2-1.
The Swedes added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Jimenez hit her second triple of the day and scored from a sac fly hit by Marissa Riley, making the score 3-1.
Sasha Martello threw 7 innings allowing 6 hits, 1 run, no walks, and collected 6 strikeouts. Martello also went 1-for-1 at the plate.
Myranda Jimenez went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and 2 triples, and scored twice for Bethany. Lilliana Martinez went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Kierstyn McMillen went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and collected 2 stolen bases, as well as scoring for the Swedes.
Game 2
The Swedes bats came alive in the second game, as the Swedes scored in every inning except the third. Sasha Martello hit a single up the middle to score Kierstyn McMillen, Lilliana Martinez, and Melinda Cratty on 2 outs, making the score 3-0.
The Swedes continued the rally in the top of the second inning, as Destiny Espinosa hit a 2 run double to left center scoring Marissa Riley and McMillen, updating the scoreboard 5-0. Martinez then hit a missile over the left field fence, scoring Espinosa for a 2 run HR, 7-0. Cratty then hit a double to right field giving the Swedes another base runner. Martello then scores Cratty and makes the score 8-0 with a base hit through the left side.
The Moundbuilders then broke the shutout in the bottom of the third inning by scoring a run from a double and a base hit, 8-1. The Swedes answered back as Martinez sent another ball over the left field fence, making the score 9-1. Bethany continued by loading the bases before Allison Rosa hit a base clearing double, scoring Cratty, Jimenez and Riley, putting the Swedes up 12-1. McMillen passed the bat by hitting an infield single, scoring Rosa and making the score 13-1. Espinosa then hit her second double of the day, scoring McMillen and making the score 14-1.
Southwestern rallied two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning making the score 14-3. The Swedes got those runs back in the top of the fifth inning as Riley scored Callissa Lucero with a base hit through the left side. Pinch hitter Maggie Heath then hit a ground ball up the middle scoring Jimenez and made the score 16-3. The Moundbuilders made a push in the bottom of the fifth by scoring a run before the Swedes secured a 16-4 victory.
Lilliana Martinez threw 4 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and collected 4 strikeouts. Martinez also went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 HR's, 2 walks and 3 RBIs.
Destiny Espinosa went 2-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs and scored once. Allison Rosa went 1-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBIs and scored once. Sasha Martello went 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs. As a team the Swedes collected 15 hits, 14 RBIs, 5 walks and 16 runs.

Swede Softball will be back in action on Saturday, March 25 at home against Friends University. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
