SWEDES FIND THEMSELVES ON BOTH SIDES OF 5-2 SCORE VS SPIRES

Leavenworth, Kan. - On March 9, the Swede Netters travelled to Leavenworth to open KCAC match-play against the University of Saint Mary. Play was at David Brewer Park.

 

The Men's team started the day down 0-1, dropping the doubles point with losses at #1 (Fran Bravo, SO & Martin Priban, JR) and #3 (Diego Bsereni, JR & Dylan Gwilt, SO). The #2 team (Sebastian Stipanov, JR & Gustavo Cardoso, FR) picked up a 6-2 win.

 

In singles, the men continued to battle and come up just short, dropping an eventual 5-2 team match. Wins on the day came at #2 (S. Stipanov; 4-6, 6-4, 6-4) and #4 (G. Cardoso; 6-2, 7-6(1). The men drop to 0-1 in KCAC play, and 4-6 overall. 

 

The Women flipped the script from the Men, starting the day with the doubles point. The Swedes picked up wins at #2 (Kyla Metro, SR & Makenna Russom, SR; 6-3) and #3 (Karee Adam, SR & Elise Richardson, FR; 6-2). 

 

Continuing into singles, the women continued the vibe of the day, picking up a team win 5-2. Scoring for the Swedes came at #1 (Sofia Castillo Paz, SR; 7-5, 6-1), #4 (Helen Harbit, JR; 5, 4), #5 (E. Richardson; 1,4), and #6 (K. Adam; 2-6, 6-2, 6-2). The women are 1-0 in KCAC play, and 3-5-1 overall. 

 

After the match, Coach DeWitt had this statement: "I thought both teams played well today, against good opponents. The men weren't able to get it done, but we'll learn from this and look to pick up a win tomorrow. I'm excited for the women; this is the first time our seniors have beaten Saint Mary. We knew it'd be an important match for us, and they did what they needed to do to get the job done. Now we need to regroup and be ready for Tabor tomorrow."

 

The Swedes return to play at home against the Tabor Bluejays on March 10. Go Swedes!
